Septic System Tips and Tricks
Do
- Practice water conservation - routinely check for plumbing leaks (i.e. toilets, that do not shut off completely, dripping faucet, etc.) Continual water leaking into your septic system may cause a system failure.
- Pump your septic tank regularly to prevent build up of solids which will damage the drain field.
- Be aware of where your drain field is located and the boundaries. It's a good idea to have "as built" drawing diagram showing the location of your tank and drain field.
- Keep track of important papers pertaining to your septic system; Location drawing, Certificate of Satisfactory Completion, the plot plan issued with septic permit showing the designated repair.
- Make arrangements with reliable service person to provide regular monitoring and maintenance. Keep records, they will be valuable if a system problem occurs.
Don't
- Flush trash, chemicals or paint (even water based), grease, disposable diapers, bleach, anti-bacterial cleaning products.
- Build any structures over the drain field, drive, park, pave or cover with plastic. The drain field needs air to function properly.
- Drill a well within 100 feet of the drain field or the replacement area
- Flood, irrigate, or otherwise cause excessive amounts of water over the drain field area (i.e., roof drains, downspouts, etc.)
